PENTICTON – Penticton city council is going to take a look at some changes to the Tag-a-Bag garbage program.

City staff are recommending council give create a new bulk rate fee for the garbage tags at $62.50 plus tax for 25 coupons.

The move comes as a result of several instances that have occurred since the introduction of the city’s cart program earlier this year where it has become evident an alternative bulk purchase rate would be useful.

The instances include rental properties requiring additional waste volumes from time to time, where the tags could be used to allow the tenant to place additional waste at the curb when needed rather than acquiring a larger cart that isn’t needed most of the year.

The move would also allow second residences such as carriage houses to place additional waste from time to time.

Landlords could also make use of a bulk tag purchase to distribute to their tenants as needed.

The tags are currently only sold individually for $3.50 per tag, while it costs $112.2 per year for a resident to upgrade to a larger or an additional cart. The proposed Tag-a-Bag bulk rate of $62.50 for 25 tags is less than the individual tag rate but more than the purchase of an additional cart.

Council will assess the issue at the regular meeting of council this afternoon, Dec. 6, at city hall council chambers.
