Penticton kicking off holiday season with weekend arts, crafts and farmers’ market events

PENTICTON – With the Christmas season approaching, events this weekend in the South Okanagan have a festive flare.

The Okanagan Makers Christmas Craft Faire and sustainable living show returns to the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6.

This is the show’s 20 year, representing the first Christmas show of the season, with 150 vendors from all over the province displaying artisan crafts and local foods. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $4, with proceeds going to support community development.

Winter markets take place at the Shatford Centre starting Saturday, Nov. 5 and every second Saturday after until Dec. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Winter vegetables including potatoes, squash, carrots and kale will be available as will fall fruits such as apples and pears. The market also has baked goods, eggs, preserves, wines and local crafts.

Penticton Arts Council presents George and Friends, starting Nov. 4 and running until Dec. 22 at Leir House.

It’s the ninth annual version of the art show featuring established and upcoming visual artists with a variety of styles from realistic to abstract and painting to poetic works,  in two and three dimensions. The opening reception takes place Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. Call 250-492-7997 for more information.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
