Vernon woman acknowledged for nearly 30 years of picking up litter

VERNON – A Vernon woman earned heartfelt applause this afternoon at city hall as she accepted an award for her many years of community service.

Helen Sidney, in her 90s, has been picking up litter on her morning walk along Bella Vista Road for nearly 30 years. Vernon council formally recognized her efforts today, Oct. 11.

“You are a great example and inspiration for all of us to follow,” Mayor Akbal Mund said.

Sidney, clearly humbled, thanked council for thinking of her and spoke briefly about her many years teaching at Armstrong Elementary School, where she taught her students the importance of picking up litter.

As smiles and applause filled the room, Sidney made sure to ask city staff if they could print out a picture of her and the mayor so she could show her kids.

“This is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Sidney said.
