Public meeting will focus on teacher strike, proposed Lavington plant

VERNON – A special meeting set for tonight will focus on two topics that have been in the news lately: The teacher strike and a proposed pellet plant in Lavington.

The special meeting, called specifically by the school district to address the two issues, starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the board office on 15 Street. The public is welcome to attend.

Representatives from Pinnacle Renewable Energy and Tolko will present to school board trustees about the proposed pellet plant near Lavington Elementary. Superintendent Joe Rogers says the district wants more information about the plant’s impact on air quality and the safety of staff and students at the school.

Trustees will also discuss the teacher strike and the uncertainty around when school will start. Vernon Teachers Association president Heather Malcolm has called on teachers, parents and members of the community to attend the meeting. Teachers have also organized picketing outside the school board office Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week.
