Jail time for Summerland man who called in a bomb threat because he was late for a flight

KELOWNA – The man arrested for calling in a bomb threat to Kelowna International Airport because he was late for a flight has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Michael Joseph Paul Howells, 37, was arrested at YLW in October 2014 and pleaded guilty to two counts of mischief in Kelowna Provincial Court.

He was caught when RCMP traced the call to his cell phone.

His lawyer says Howells, a long time drug addict, was late to catch a plane to Alberta where he worked, according to Global Okanagan.

Judge Wilf Klinger called the behavior “narcissistic.”

“The accused must have known the consequences of his telephone call. What the delay would mean for others was disregarded.”

He sentenced him to one year in jail followed by two years’ probation and ordered him to pay $4,000 to the City of Kelowna.
