UPDATE: Cause of Vernon house fire still under investigation

Both fire department and insurance investigators are looking for the cause of a house fire early Saturday morning in Vernon.

A family of four and their guest escaped with their lives when the awoke to smoke and flames around 5:20 a.m.

“The three adults and two children all made it out safe and sound,” said Vernon deputy fire chief Lawrie Skolrood.

The fire started on a small landing on the 2nd floor of the house in the 3000 block of 38th Ave. It then spread into the home through windows and a door.

There’s serious damage to the top floor and the fire burned a hole through the roof.

“Our fire crews stopped the fire in it’s tracks when they arrived,” according to Skolrood. “They confined the fire to the top storey of the building.”

Investigators found the point of origin for the blaze. But Skolrood says they are still looking for the cause.

The family is in the care of Emergency Social Services for three days until their insurance policy kicks in.

VERNON – Fire investigators are on the scene looking for the cause of a house fire.

The blaze broke out earlier this morning at a home in the 3000 block of 38th St., just west of downtown near Knox Presbyterian Church.

Everyone made it out of the burning home uninjured.

According to the Morning Star, there was severe structural damage to the roof and the 2nd floor of the home.
