UPDATE: Crews making progress on grass fire at Kamloops recycling facility

A grass fire near at a Kamloops recycling plant sent smoke high above the city today.

The blaze, which was sparked this morning, June 6, near the Trans-Canada Highway spread to recycling materials outside Emterra Environmental in Valleyview, a recycling plant just off the South Thompson River, according to a Kamloops Fire Rescue tweet.

Crews continue to fight the fire and the department said "full extinguishment will take some time yet."

The fire department said trains running through the area have been stopped as the fire is near a CP rail line.

No word yet on how the fire started.

Kamloops Fire Rescue did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
