B.C. psychiatric nurse suspended for having relationship with former patient

A B.C. psychiatric nurse has been suspended for six months for a sexual relationship with a former patient.

According to a Jan. 10 B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives decision registered psychiatric nurse Katelynn Somerset entered into a sexual relationship with a "highly vulnerable" former patient shortly after they'd been discharged from psychiatric care.

The decision says the relationship occurred between February and May 2021 but the decision does not say where in B.C. Somerset was based.

Somerset signed a consent agreement admitting to the relationship.

The nursing regulator suspended Somerset for six months and put limits on what type of work she can do when she returns.

She will also have to take courses in boundaries and professional accountability.

The nursing regulator says it's satisfied that the terms will protect the public. No other information is given in the decision.
