CP NewsAlert: Parole document says past drug, alcohol had caused suspect to lose mind

A Parole Board of Canada document says a fugitive wanted in a deadly stabbing rampage in Saskatchewan has a history of drug and alcohol abuse that had caused him to lose his mind.

It also says Myles Sanderson has amassed 59 criminal convictions over the last two decades.

Sanderson is wanted as a suspect in the stabbings on Sunday that left 10 people dead and 18 wounded on the James Smith Cree Nation and the village of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon.

Sanderson was sentenced to his first federal sentence of four years and four months for various offences, including assault, assault with a weapon and robbery.

The document says that in 2017 and 2018 Sanderson threatened to kill a First Nation band store employee and stabbed two people with a fork.

It says he talked about losing his mind and getting angry when consuming drugs or alcohol but had previously completed treatment for substance abuse.
