Phone app aims to combat bike thefts in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – An app to help locate stolen bikes is launching in Kamloops this week.

Kamloops RCMP are starting the Project 529 Garage in the city on May 14, RCMP say in a press release. The project is a bike recovery program which uses a phone app to help register and find stolen bikes.

The app helps owners collect photos and information about their bike in case it’s stolen, the release says. A tamper proof label is also available to identify the bike as being a part of the project, which is normally $13 but will be free at the project’s launch.

If a registered bike is stolen the app alerts other users about the theft, the location of the theft and what was stolen.

The program is already being used in the Lower Mainland and local officers hope to have 2,500 bikes registered in Kamloops within three years.

The launch is happening on May 14 at the Emergency Services Day event. People can also download the app themselves and pre-register their bike before the launch.

Future registrations are being planned but no details are available just yet.
