Grant aimed at Civil War battlefield preservation in W.Va.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The National Park Service has awarded a $614,000 grant toward preservation of 280 acres of West Virginia farmland that was the site of a Civil War battle.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the grant was awarded to the Jefferson County Farmland Protection Board and the Public Land Trust of the Eastern Panhandle.
The 1864 Battle of Summit Point between Union and Confederate Army forces in Jefferson County resulted in about 1,000 casualties. It was one of the opening clashes in Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley campaign.
