RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia says six people have been killed in a security raid in a predominantly Shiite region in the Eastern Province of the kingdom.
The state-run al-Ekhbariya channel on Wednesday released the names of those killed in al-Qatif, with three identified as from the same family. Al-Ekhbariya aired images of what State Security said were weapons seized in the raid, including seven machine-guns, a pistol, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and 22 mobile phones.
State Security said five security officers were wounded with minor injuries in Monday’s raid in al-Qatif.
The region of al-Qatif where the raid took place was the site of minority Shiite protests against the government in 2011 and home to prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, who was executed in 2016 for his role in the protests.
