The Latest: Sen. Hassan opposes Kavanaugh’s nomination

CONCORD, N.H. – The Latest on New Hampshire’s U.S. senators opposing the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court (all times local):

Both of New Hampshire’s Democratic U.S. senators have announced their opposition to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Sen. Maggie Hassan said Monday that Kavanaugh has promoted a judicial philosophy that diminishes the rights of women and people of colour, favours corporations over people, and promotes a right-wing ideology. She said everything Kavanaugh has said or done undermines his claim that he would be a neutral and impartial arbiter.

Shaheen said she believes Republicans are “deliberately concealing” Kavanaugh’s record and that he is out of step on the scope of a president’s executive power, women’s right to abortions, and pre-existing conditions under the Affordable Care Act.

Democrats don’t have the votes to block President Donald Trump’s nominee.

Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire says she’s reached the conclusion that Republicans are “deliberately concealing” the record of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and that she’s going to oppose his nomination.

Shaheen said Monday that Kavanaugh is out of step on the scope of a president’s executive power, women’s right to abortions, and pre-existing conditions under the Affordable Care Act.

She also said she’s frustrated by the “lack of documentation” produced by Republicans and the nominee’s “refusal to answer basic questions about his judicial record and philosophy.”

Democrats don’t have the votes to block President Donald Trump’s nominee, but that didn’t stop them from putting up a fight at his confirmation hearings. Several Republicans would have to flip because Republicans hold a 51-49 edge in the Senate.
