RED DEER, Alta. – RCMP say a minivan containing a man’s body that was stolen from a funeral home in Red Deer, Alta., has been recovered.
Police say the body was still in the back of the vehicle when it was found in a central-area neighbourhood of the city, hours after it was taken around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The driver had briefly left the black 2014 Chrysler Town and Country in the funeral home’s parking lot when it was stolen.
An RCMP helicopter was brought in to aid in the search and other police agencies were alerted before information from the public helped track it down.
The dead man’s next of kin were also informed of the theft.
Officers went door to door in the area where the vehicle was discovered but police are still searching for a suspect.
RCMP Supt. Ken Foster said in a release on Tuesday that it was a “crime of opportunity with a very unfortunate and upsetting twist.”
