VANCOUVER – A police officer in Vancouver has been charged with assault following an arrest that left a man with serious injuries more than two years ago.
The BC Prosecution Service says in a statement that a charge of assault causing bodily harm has been approved against Const. Ken Stanworth in an alleged on-duty incident in downtown Vancouver on March 1, 2016.
The Independent Investigations Office has previously said a man suffered unspecified serious injuries when Vancouver police arrested him.
The agency, which probes all cases of police-involved death or serious harm, forwarded a report to Crown counsel in January for charges to be considered in the case.
A spokesman for the Vancouver Police Department says Stanworth remains on active duty.
He is scheduled to appear in provincial court on July 9.
