Terror concerns prompt DC parking changes for special events

WASHINGTON – Following vehicle-based attacks in New York and Charlottesville, Virginia, a new parking policy could force thousands to move their cars during major events in the nation’s capital.

The Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement to WTOP-FM they’re instituting new parking restrictions, including removing all vehicles along special event routes, particularly during races and parades.

At Thursday’s D.C. Council hearing, Councilmember Charles Allen levied criticism, questioning the effectiveness of focusing on cars and predicting it will kill events that have gone on for years. He described the process that would allow some residents to get one-day parking permits as “convoluted.”

Towing under the new policy could also add to event organizers’ costs.

The new rules will apply to races just weeks away, including the March 10 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.
