DC paid out $4.3M for employee-involved accidents since 2013

WASHINGTON – The District of Columbia government has paid out more than 1,000 settlements involving 930 workers over the past five years.

WUSA-TV obtained D.C. Office of Risk Management records showing the city paid $4.3 million in accident settlements from 2013 to 2017, all from taxpayer funds.

Public Works Director Chris Shorter say the city doesn’t have a blanket policy for disciplining employees with multiple accidents. The data obtained doesn’t specify who was at fault in the accident.

Chief Risk Officer Jed Ross says every claim is carefully reviewed. The employee involved in the accident is not part of hearing and isn’t informed of the outcome.

The city government is working on a new system to track accidents and determine which ones were avoidable.

The city has 6,000 vehicles on the streets.
