Thousands without power across B.C. South Coast following wind storm

VANCOUVER – High winds caused havoc, knocking out power and closing roads across B.C.’s South Coast this weekend.

BC Hydro says crews were working through Sunday to restore electricity to 65,000 customers.

The storm downed trees, causing damage to poles and wires across the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

DriveBC says parts of Highways 101 and 24 were closed for several hours because of tree branches and power lines blocking the roads.

BC Ferries says a number of sailings have been cancelled or are behind schedule because of the conditions.

Port Moody police say a 23-year-old woman sustained minor injuries when she was knocked down by a falling tree while walking toward a bus stop.

Police say several people on a bus that was also hit by the same fallen tree got out to help until officers arrived.
