Watch how quickly this car fire grows in video captured by Vernon man

VERNON – Flames quickly engulfed a car this morning, as can be seen in this video shot by a local photographer.

Eric Draht usually photographs weddings, but found his camera pointed at a vigorous fire in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 8. He says he heard a boom around 4 a.m. and looked out to see a car on fire in the 3800-block of 40 Avenue.

In the video, you can hear Draht make the 911 call, in which he tells the dispatcher the blaze is ‘spreading pretty quick.’

The fire continues to grow, and within about five minutes the Vernon Fire Department arrives and douses the flames.

Deputy Fire Chief Jack Blair says it was too dark at the time to complete a full examination of the car, but investigators will be taking a closer look today.

He says police attended, but notes it’s too early to say if the fire is suspicious.

“We’re not sure what it is at this point,” he says.

No one was in the vehicle at the time, and no bystanders were hurt, Blair says.
