Train crossing in Finland closed after deadly crash

HELSINKI – Authorities in Finland say an unguarded railroad level crossing in the southern part of the country, where four people were killed and 11 injured last month, has been closed until safety has been improved.

Finland’s Transport Agency said Thursday that the crossing near Raseborg, about 85 kilometres (53 miles) southwest of Helsinki, was closed because it was deemed an “immediate danger” to traffic safety.

The Safety Investigation Authority said Wednesday that the crossing was “highly dangerous” because passing vehicles can’t properly see approaching trains.

On Oct. 26, three soldiers and a passenger were killed when a commuter train collided with a military vehicle. A police investigation hasn’t been completed yet.
