Spring temperatures create slushy mess at local ski hill
KELOWNA – A near record amount of snow this year combined with unseasonably warm temperatures have left the village at Big White Ski Resort a soupy, muddy mess.
The snow base currently sits at 280 centimetres at Big White — the highest it’s been in the last ten years — and with temperatures staying above 0 Celsius, the snow is melting fast in some areas, including parking lots.
On Sunday, March 6, one young visitor found himself stuck in a sinkhole outside The Market.
It took a pair of Big White firefighters standing on the back bumper to pop the young man’s hatchback out of the massive puddle.
All runs and lifts remain open and temperatures are staying below freezing on the majority of the hill.
More than 50 cm of new snow has fallen in the last seven days and temperatures are forecast for just below freezing for the rest of the week.
