Sheriff: On-duty deputy dead in crash may have fallen asleep
ASHLAND, N.Y. – Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy killed in an on-duty vehicle crash in New York was nearing the end of his overnight shift and may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
Greene County Sheriff Gregory Seeley tells the Daily Freeman (http://bit.ly/2lquv0M ) that Deputy Kevin Haverly had started his shift at 7 p.m. Monday and was driving on state Route 23 in Ashland when he crashed around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Seeley says the 26-year-old deputy was thrown from the vehicle after it went into a ditch, hit a telephone pole and rolled over. The sheriff says there’s a “strong possibility” Haverly fell asleep while driving.
Haverly joined the sheriff’s office in July 2014 and previously worked as a corrections officer.
He is survived by his wife and their three children.
