Mom of slain cop hosts 20th and last holiday police dinner

WASHINGTON – A Washington woman who lost her police officer son to an ambush shooting nearly two decades ago has hosted her 20th and final turkey dinner for police and their families.

NBC News reports (http://nbcnews.to/2h4OmRR ) Shirley Gibson and her husband, Harrison, welcomed nearly 400 people to their home Wednesday night. The early Christmas dinner tradition started in 1997 after their 27-year-old son Brian was killed in his patrol car at a traffic light. Gibson says the idea to make her son’s favourite dishes and serve them to his fellow officers.

Just 15 people showed up the first year, but the final dinner required 18 turkeys and two dozen pans of corn bread and sweet potatoes.

Gibson is 70 and decided Wednesday’s dinner will be the last. This time next year, she says she may go on a cruise.
