Vernon’s top stories this week

VERNON – The week in Vernon began with heart wrenching tragedy, continued with a story about a couple that were just trying to do the right thing, and ended with a reminder that Mother Nature is fickle.

A small North Okanagan community continues to mourn the loss of a recent high school graduate who was killed in an industrial accident. Bradley Haslam, 18, was working on the night shift, part of a clean-up crew. He became entangled in a conveyor belt. He was working alone at the time and no one else on his shift saw it happen.

In Vernon, a landowner who thinks he was just following the rule of the law and protecting blue heron habitat, is being sued for a fallen tree.

And the weather this week could cost a North Okanagan orchardist up to $500,000. Jeet Dukia is one of many farmers in the valley who suffered severe hail and rain damage.
