NATO chief looking forward to meeting with Russian minister

BRUSSELS – A NATO official said alliance chief Jens Stoltenberg is looking forward to meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov soon on how to reduce chances of an accidental confrontation between Russian and NATO armed forces.

The meeting could come next week, when Stoltenberg and Lavrov are scheduled to be in New York for the annual session of the U.N. General Assembly.

Acting NATO spokesperson Carmen Romero said Stoltenberg’s deputy, Alexander Vershbow, met Thursday with Russia’s NATO ambassador, Alexander Grushko. The two men discussed “ways to increase transparency and risk reduction,” following up on a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council in July.

Romero said: “NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg looks forward to discussing these issues and next steps with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the near future.”
