Nobel laureate Tutu leaves South African hospital

JOHANNESBURG – Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu has left a South African hospital where he was treated for the last three weeks.

Tutu’s family said Wednesday that the 84-year-old retired archbishop had been admitted to the hospital in Cape Town “to bring a recurring infection under control.”

The family says Tutu had a minor surgical procedure a week ago to address the cause of the infection. It has not provided details about the illness.

It says Tutu’s wife, Leah, was “overjoyed” to welcome him home.

Tutu was hospitalized several times last year.

He was an outspoken opponent of apartheid, South Africa’s former system of white minority rule, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
