Prosecutor: Mom confessed to killing disabled adult daughter

EASTLAKE, Ohio – A prosecutor says a woman walked into an Ohio police station last week and confessed to killing her developmentally disabled daughter.

Fifty-year-old Sandra Speck has been charged with murder in the death of 21-year-old Mindy Speck at their apartment in Eastlake, 20 miles east of Cleveland. She pleaded not guilty last week and remains jailed on a $50,000 bond after a court appearance Tuesday.

Authorities haven’t said how Mindy Speck died.

Eastlake Prosecutor Judd Hawkins said Wednesday that Sandra Speck was “overwhelmed” by the responsibility of caring for her daughter and had problems restraining her.

Lake County public defender Charles Grieshammer said in court Tuesday that Sandra Speck devoted her life to caring for her daughter and called it a “difficult situation.” He declined to comment further Wednesday.
