4 suspects killed in running gun battle in Mexico

MEXICO CITY – Four suspected gunmen are dead and seven police officers and two soldiers injured following a running gun battle in northern Mexico near the U.S. border.

Gunmen opened fire on two state police patrol vehicles on Thursday in Ciudad Miguel Aleman, across the border from Roma, Texas.

The gunmen hit the gas tank of one of the police vehicles, causing burn injuries to five officers. Two other police were injured by gunfire.

Police and soldiers chased the gunmen, who joined a four-vehicle convoy fleeing west.

The assailants’ convoy opened fire on a military vehicle at a toll booth, wounding two soldiers.

The soldiers returned fire, hitting two of the trucks with home-made bullet-proofing.

The vehicles crashed. Four bodies were found inside, along with a .50-calibre sniper rifle and grenades.
