Police believe ‘driver inattentiveness’ caused Falkland semi truck crash

FALKLAND – Police say it’s very lucky no one was hurt after a semi truck went off the road striking a power pole and a house in Falkland yesterday.

The DCT Chambers' truck drove off Highway 97 Wednesday morning, Jan. 28, sheering a power pole, knocking out hydro lines and hitting a home, RCMP Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy says.

“The porch was significantly damaged,” she says.

Someone was in the home at the time, but was not injured. The truck driver sustained minor bumps and bruises, but was otherwise unhurt.

“We were very fortunate no one was injured,” Noseworthy says.

The incident resulted in Highway 97 being shut down in both directions for about an hour, with other delays affecting drivers later in the day as the truck was removed from the scene and power lines repaired by B.C. Hydro.

The accident remains under investigation, with the possibility of a traffic ticket being issued to the driver.

Noseworthy says drugs, alcohol and speed are not considered factors, and it’s believed the incident was a case of driver inattentiveness.
