US joint chiefs chair visits Turkey with anti-coup message
WASHINGTON – The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff is visiting Turkey to address U.S. troops and meet senior Turkish military officials. It’s the most senior visit by an American official since last month’s failed coup attempt.
The Pentagon said Gen. Joseph Dunford arrived in Turkey on Monday. He delivered messages condemning the coup and stressing the importance of Turkey’s contributions to the fight against the Islamic State group and as a NATO ally. Some in Turkey have complained that the United States has not been forceful enough in condemning the coup, which Turkish leaders have blamed on a cleric who lives in exile in Pennsylvania.
While in Turkey, Dunford will see U.S. personnel stationed at Incirlik (IHN’-jur-lihk) Air Base and meet his Turkish counterpart as well as the prime minister.
