Puerto Rican infantry group from Connecticut to get medals

HARTFORD, Conn. – Members of a Puerto Rican military unit that served in several wars are being honoured with Congressional Gold Medals in Connecticut.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, is scheduled to present the medals Saturday outside the state capitol in Hartford.

Nine members from Hartford of the Army’s 65th Infantry Regiment will be honoured. Three are expected to attend the ceremony, while family and friends will accept the medals on behalf of the other six members, who either have died or are unable to attend.

The segregated military unit, known as the Borinqueneers, fought in World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

Congress has awarded the gold medals dating back to the Revolutionary War. They are Congress’ highest honour of appreciation for distinguished achievement.
