Man convicted of capital murder in shooting of state trooper

DINWIDDIE, Va. – A man has been convicted of capital murder in the 2013 shooting of a Virginia state trooper.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/2a7RTLh) that 31-year-old Russell E. Brown III of Chesterfield County was convicted Thursday in the death of Master Trooper Junius A. Walker.

The newspaper reports that the Dinwiddie County jury will return to court Friday to begin the sentencing phase. Commonwealth’s Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill says she will seek the death penalty.

Walker was a 35-year veteran of the state police. Brown was charged with shooting him in March 2013 when the trooper stopped Brown’s car on the shoulder of Interstate 85 in Dinwiddie to see if he needed help.

Brown had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
