Latest: Agency: 3 Chicago cops should be fired for shootings

CHICAGO – The Latest on Chicago police following recent shootings by and of officers around the U.S. (all times local):

10:30 a.m.

The Chicago police oversight agency that last week ruled that two police shootings were not justified now wants the three officers involved in those incidents to be fired.

The Independent Police Review Authority recommendations go to Superintendent Eddie Johnson and then to the city’s police board, which makes a final decision on whether to fire officers.

In IPRA documents, the agency found that one officer was not justified in a 2013 fatal shooting and a 2015 shooting in which a man was injured. IPRA determined the officers were not in serious danger when they fired their weapons.

Last week’s findings and this week’s recommendation to fire the officers mark a dramatic shift in the embattled agency that’s been harshly criticized for taking the side of officers in the vast majority of shooting cases.

Chicago’s police union is asking officers to refuse to work overtime during the Labor Day weekend to protest the “disrespect” of police and the recent slayings of officers around the United States.

The department that put thousands of extra police officers on the street during other summer holiday weekends to combat an expected surge in violence says officers will be ordered to work overtime if not enough volunteer.

Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President Dean Angelo says officers are angry about what they see as a lack of support for police by elected officials in Chicago and nationally.

Angelo says the request was made on behalf of officers’ families who have grown more worried about their loved ones’ safety since the police shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
