Authorities ID man who died after getting caught in eddy

DEERFIELD, Mass. – Authorities have identified a man who died of an apparent drowning over the weekend while swimming in a Massachusetts river.

The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office on Monday identified the victim as 30-year-old Wilver Perez, of Guatemala.

Authorities say Perez was swimming with friends in the Deerfield River off McClelland Farms Road in Deerfield on Saturday afternoon when he got caught in an eddy.

Perez was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cause of death will be determined by the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. No foul play is suspected.

Deerfield is located in western Massachusetts, about 30 miles north of Springfield.
