Family of 5 killed in Mexican border state

MEXICO CITY – Authorities say five members of a family have been killed in their home by armed intruders in northern Mexico.

The Tamaulipas state Coordination Group said in a statement Friday that two women and three minors were killed in Ciudad Victoria Thursday night.

Authorities did not give a motive for the attack, but there have been multiple violent episodes recently in the border state’s capital.

Last weekend 15 people — 11 from the same family — were killed in their sleep.

Violence has been on the rise since two factions of the Zetas cartel began battling for control of the area. One is called the “Zetas Old School” and the other the “Northeast Cartel.” The latter is led by the family of Miguel Angel Trevino Morales who was captured in 2013.
