Shark attack injures man off Sullivan’s Island

SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. – Authorities say a man was bitten by a small shark Monday in knee-deep water on Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina.

The Sullivan’s Island fire and police departments said in a statement that the 35-year-old was “nipped” on Monday afternoon by a shark that the victim estimated to be 3 to 4 feet long.

The man, who was on vacation with his wife, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He wasn’t identified.

Prior to Monday, the last reported bite on Sullivan’s Island occurred in May 2015. The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/28Yxpoh) reports that there hasn’t been a fatal attack in South Carolina since the 1850s.
