Albania suspended police back as wiretapping charges dropped

TIRANA, Albania – An Albanian appeals court has dropped charges the police chief for allegedly illegal use of wiretapping equipment.

The Tirana Appeals Court on Thursday ruled that Haki Cako had committed no offence, leaving him free to resume his job.

A week ago Cako was suspended after prosecutors started to investigate suspect abuse of his power on a wiretapping device brought from an Italian assisting mission for training.

The prosecutor-general assured Italian ambassador it was not being investigated and Prime Minister Edi Rama publicly apologized to Rome, calling the prosecutors’ investigation a “random political conspiracy” urged from the opposition Democratic Party.

Albania is at the last steps of a justice reform package considered fundamental in fighting corruption and convincing the European Union to decide on launching membership negotiations.
