Alabama councilman shot in South Africa back home

MOBILE, Ala. – A Mobile City Council member who was shot in the face during a tour bus ambush in South Africa is back home and talking about what happened.

C.J. Small Jr. tells WKRG-TV (http://bit.ly/22KDaf0 ) the attack happened within seconds while he was on an unofficial tour bus during a convention last month.

Small says gunmen began shooting during a robbery attempt. A bullet went through his left cheek, which is still swollen.

Small spent almost two weeks in a South African hospital and he says it will take as long as eight weeks to recover fully.

Small returned to Alabama over the weekend and was out visiting a summer program in his district on Monday.

The council member owns a funeral home and was in South Africa for a mortician’s convention.
