Guatemalan steel producer evaded $35 million in taxes

[byline]

GUATEMALA CITY – Guatemalan authorities say a domestic steel producer dodged $35 million in taxes during a three-year period.

Attorney General Thelma Aldana announced the case against Aceros de Guatemala Monday. The company faces numerous criminal proceedings.

The company published an ad in local newspaper saying it was unaware of the problem and willing to co-operate with authorities. It could owe more than $100 million because Guatemalan law requires the back taxes be paid in addition to a 100 per cent penalty and interest.

The country’s tax chief Juan Francisco Solorzano says the company paid the taxes it owed on May 6. His agency previously had a reputation for colluding with the business sector to help companies evade taxes.
