Yemeni officials say bomber targets Aden police chief’s home

SANAA, Yemen – Yemeni security officials say a suicide car bomber in women’s clothes has detonated his explosives-laden vehicle near the house of the southern city of Aden’s security chief, wounding two people.

Thursday’s attack is the third to target the home of Maj. Gen. Shallal Shayei since December.

Shayei was unhurt by Thursday’s attack, which started a small fire outside the security chief’s house.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Yemen has been mired in a conflict pitting the Shiite Houthi rebels against the internationally-backed government, which is allied with a Saudi-led coalition. Militants from al-Qaida and the extremist Islamic State group have taken advantage of the chaos to expand their footprint, but government forces have recently cleared Aden of militants.
