Holidays and weather doesn’t stop flow of blood donations in Penticton

PENTICTON – With a blood donor clinic taking place in Penticton this week red has come to signify more than the Christmas season for many South Okanagan and Similkameen residents this year.

Canadian Blood Services held a two day clinic in Penticton earlier this week and turnout for holiday clinics can be hard to predict when the festive season and winter weather is factored in.

"Our need for donations is constant throughout the year. Sometimes at this time of year when people are busy with family and friends we do see our donations become a little more challenging because people are travelling or they’re busy with family. Penticton is no different when it comes to that,” Canadian Blood Services Territory Manager Gayle Voyer says.

Voyer notes all the blood service’s clinics can experience lower donations during the holiday season.

Voyer says the clinic is always looking for new donors.

“The biggest thing is for people who haven’t done it before, we ask them to come and give it a try,” Voyer says, adding seasoned donors could help by introducing a new donor to the process.

Canadian Blood Services bring their clinics to Penticton each month, alternating monthly for three days, then for two, like the one this week. They’ll be back for three days next month, Jan. 27 to 29, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Penticton Seniors Centre at 2965 South Main St.

Residents interested in donating are invited to take an eligibility quiz at the Canadian Blood Services website. Appointments can be booked online.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
