Evidence indicates Penticton dog attacked by deer, not cougar
PENTICTON – A Penticton resident’s pet was subject to an encounter with a wild animal yesterday — but was it a predator?
Penticton conservation officer Dave Cox says his fellow officer Jeff Hanratty investigated a report of a dog encountering a cougar on Marina Way at approximately 1:30 p.m., Nov. 25.
After meeting with the dog’s owner and looking over the dog, Hanratty says deer hair was found on the pet, indicating a possible altercation with one the city’s resident deer.
No evidence was found suggesting the dog was attacked by a cougar.
Cox says no one actually saw the encounter and there have been no additional sightings or incidences in the area since.
He says they will continue to monitor the situation.
