Thousands of dollars worth of copper wire stolen in Vernon

VERNON – Police in Vernon are investigating after a copper wire theft last week.

Roughly 166 feet of copper wire was stolen from Mormak Equipment on Beckettes Frontage Road in Vernon sometime during the night of Tuesday, Nov. 10.

RCMP Const. Jocelyn Noseworthy says the lock was cut and the fence damaged where the suspect, or suspects, broke in. The value of the wire is estimated at $5000.

“It’s high value and easy to sell,” Noseworthy says, adding its hard to track if the culprits cut up the material.

A large quantity of scrap copper pipe valued at $6000 was stolen from Lumby Oct. 13, and two 14-foot corrugated culverts worth $1200 were pilfered in September.

“Unfortunately we do have people in the area willing to steal anything,” Noseworthy says.

There’s a chance the series of thefts are connected, but she says there’s no solid evidence that’s the case.
