Sinking boat abandoned in South Thompson river
KAMLOOPS – Their boat was sinking so fast, they didn't even have time to throw on their life jackets.
Kamloops RCMP tell InfoTel News, four people and a dog leapt overboard when their boat started going down in the South Thompson river in Kamloops late Saturday afternoon.
Struggling in the swift current and high river level from the spring runoff, the two men, 60 and 48, along with the two women, 49 and 38, made it to shore with the dog. No one was hurt.
The RCMP's preliminary investigation shows the drain plug for the 22 ft., fibreglass powerboat wasn't installed. As a result, the boat took on water.
The boat hasn't been recovered. It was last seen sinking below the surface of the river across from Riverside Park in Kamloops.
Kamloops RCMP are taking advantage of the near-tragedy to suggest boaters refer to the Safe Boating Guide published by Transport Canada.
