What’s happening on the last long weekend of summer

PENTICTON – The last long weekend of summer will be a low-key affair in Penticton this year.

The entertainment agenda is light on this year’s Labour Day long weekend, as the city takes a pause before ramping up the schedule the following weekend with the Pentastic Jazz Festival, the Vancouver Canucks Young Stars Classic and the Raymond James Dragonboat Festival, all taking place the following weekend.

This weekend will be a good time to visit Andy’s Animal Acres in Naramata, however. The farm has a new baby llama, born on Aug. 30. Andy's Animal Acres is open daily through to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Noble Ridge Winery is hosting its annual Barrels and Barbecue event on Friday goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

First Fridays at Penticton Art Gallery is a free, monthly, all ages open mic night on Friday. Light refreshments will be available for a donation.

The Penticton Farmers Market  and the Downtown Community Market continue on Main Street from 8:30 a.m. until 1p.m. on Saturday.

A benefit dance for victims of the Rock Creek wildfire will take place at Orchard house at 157 Orchard Ave. in Penticton on Saturday from 7:30  to 11 p.m. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to the Rock Creek Lions Club. There will also be a silent auction for a two night stay for two at the Therapy Vineyards guesthouse.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
