Public input needed for cemetery planning

Penticton's two cemeteries will need fresh ideas from the public on Tuesday.

An open house will be held at Lakeview Cemetery Columbarium Gardens tomorrow, at 775 Lower Bench Rd. between 3 to 7 p.m. Attendees can discuss the proposed master plan for Fairview and Lakeview cemeteries, review conceptual plans and provide feedback.

Acting mayor Garry Litke said, “The master plan project is an opportunity to ensure that the cemeteries will meet the needs of residents throughout the next 25 to 50 years.”

The Fairview and Lakeview cemeteries are municipally owned and operated and are the only lands within Penticton providing active burial space.

The existing in-ground burial inventory is expected to meet local demand for the next five years, while columbarium facilities, places to hold cremated remains, at Lakeview are projected to meet demand for those choosing cremation for many more years.

A consulting and landscape architect firm will prepare a master plan to guide development and a design for future land development.
