Police: Officer used stun gun to stop man from hurting self

MIAMI – Florida police say an officer used a stun gun on a homeless man to stop him from hurting himself, but the man later died.

The Miami Herald reports 38-year-old Luis Alberto Luna was stunned Sunday morning and declared dead about an hour later. Deputy Police Chief Ronald Papier says the officer shocked Luna to stop him from hurting himself.

Police body camera footage released Tuesday shows officers convincing Luna to stop walking through traffic. Luna then is seen walking to a bus shelter where he takes out a pocket knife and makes stabbing motions at himself. Footage shows Luna ignoring commands to drop the knife and apparently being stunned before becoming unresponsive.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. The seven officers involved were administratively reassigned until Wednesday.
