Stocks fell and bond prices rose on Wall Street Thursday as investors turned cautious and shifted money into lower-risk holdings.
Communication services, health care and energy stocks accounted for a big slice of the selling, which came as traders weighed the implications of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump and a slowdown in U.S. economic growth. Consumer products makers and real estate companies rose.
On Thursday:
The S&P 500 index fell 7.25 points, or 0.2%, to 2,977.62.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 79.59 points, or 0.3%, to 26,891.12.
The Nasdaq dropped 46.72 points, or 0.6%, to 8,030.66.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies gave up 17.33 points, or 1.1%, to 1,533.33.
For the week:
The S&P 500 is down 14.45 points, or 0.5%.
The Dow is down 43.95 points, or 0.2%.
The Nasdaq is down 87.01 points, or 1.1%.
The Russell 2000 is down 26.44 points, or 1.7%.
For the year:
The S&P 500 is up 470.77 points, or 18.8%.
The Dow is up 3,563.66 points, or 15.3%.
The Nasdaq is up 1,395.38 points, or 21%.
The Russell 2000 is up 184.77 points, or 13.7%.
