German court orders stabbing suspect to mental hospital

BERLIN – A German court has ordered a 28-year-old man accused of stabbing four people at a train station, one of them fatally, to be held in a psychiatric hospital.

A statement from the court said the German citizen was ordered to remain in a secure clinic Thursday “due to his continued danger to the public.” He was identified only as Paul H.

Police say the suspect shouted “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” during the May 2016 attack east of Munich. Authorities never found any links to Islamic extremists.

The man was sent to a psychiatric hospital last year after medical experts concluded he was mentally ill and at most partially legally responsible for his actions.

He had been admitted to mental institutions several times before the attack.
