Wildfires under control in south of France
PARIS – Fires that ravaged more than 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of vegetation in the south of France have been brought under control, although high winds and hot weather conditions remain a concern for firefighters.
Multiple fires broke out on Monday evening in the Marseille area and the nearby departments of Aude and Tarn, requiring more than 1,000 firefighters to intervene.
Authorities said all fires were under control on Tuesday but the exceptionally hot weather combined with high winds kept fire brigades on alert.
Lieutenant Michel Faelli, from the Aude battalion, said “our only fear is that the wind … will rekindle the flames.”
Between 800 and 1,000 hectares were destroyed in Aude, while authorities said 80 hectares burned in Tarn and 390 hectares near Marseille.
